Rec-cember Day 6: The Will Darling Adventures by KJ Charles
Dec. 6th, 2025 10:06 pmThis is a trilogy of historical m/m romances by KJ Charles, the queen of the genre. Now, anything penned by KJ Charles is a cut above anyone else's, imho, so if you haven't read anything of hers, you totally should. Characterisation, plot, intrigue, smut, excellent writing, her books have it all. The Will Darling Adventures are set in London in the 1920s. It's a spy/action series with an amazing love story at its heart, where the conflict is absolutely real and the characters have an emotional growth arc across the three books. It's the most satisfying kind of romance. You will fall in love with the two MCs, it's impossible not to. Once you've finished the books you'll be left wanting more, so here's some fic to tide you over. These are all Kim/Will, with a touch of DS/Archie, and won't make much sense unless you've read the books, I'm afraid. Btw, the audiobook version of the books, narrated by Cornell Collins, is just sublime.
the world is but a word. 1.6K words. Will was speaking with a customer when Sir Archibald Curtis walked into his bookshop. A lovely little vignette. Podfic availbale, though I haven't listened to it yet.
scrape out what's left (at the end of the year). 2.2K words. The drive to Holmclere was uneventful, leisurely, and most importantly: not completely overshadowed by one or both of them being framed for murder. At least it had that going for it. Lovely epilogue for the whole seriesscrape out what's left (at the end of the year).
one shade the more. 3.9K words.Perfect Will and Kim voice, their banter kills me.
The Pitt
detect my sudden existence on your sonar by Lirazel . 25K words Mel/Frank. Mel thought everything would get easier when he came back. Instead, it's a new kind of torture. This fic is, to me, the definitive take on Mel's POV. I'm not on the spectrum, I've little experience with people who are, so I may as well be talking out of my arse, but reading this story is just such an immersive experience, ti does such an excellent job of sucking you in and making you feel like you're living it all as Mel would. And the pining is exquisite. So good it's almost unbearable. Gah.

Rec-cember Day 6
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Jewish Christmas by
Ensconced in the supply closet, Jake told Amy, grimly, “Nutcracker Ballet.”
Amy gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
“I thought it was bad when I caught her standing for 20 minutes staring at the tree in the front office --” Jake grabbed for Amy’s hands. “Babe, you gotta help me here. I am wildly unqualified to salvage Rosa’s Christmas. I have one single Christmas card to play, and while I’m obviously always happy to play that card --”
Amy winced, and shook her head. “You know Rosa still hasn’t forgiven Bruce Willis for A Good Day to Die Hard. Giving her a very Die Hard Christmas is just going to fill her with additional rage.”
Your turn to roll. Again.
Dec. 5th, 2025 11:37 pm++ The recently premiered Canadian BL show, Heated Rivalry, has been making the rounds among fandom spaces. I haven't seen it yet myself, however I'm absolutely tickled by there finally being a hockey-based BL romance show, especially with it being quite mature with its content, aka the sex scenes. I know that the genre itself is quite popular, hockey RPF and hockey AUs fanfics abound in fandom, so it was about time it actually ended up getting made for television. Funnily, I follow a few people who constantly post about IRL hockey, so it can be a bit confusing at first glance on which are from the show and which are actual real life hockey players, lol.
++ I've been waiting until some episodes were already out before I started watching the fourth campaign of Critical Role, and I finally have.
( My thoughts on Critical Role, Campaign 4 Episode 1: The Fall of Thjazi Fang )
Overall, I'm really looking forward to catching up.
Rec-cember Day 5: Hockey romance
Dec. 5th, 2025 11:39 pmSo, today was my day off and I watched the first three episodes of the Heated Rivalry tv series just because I've seen some gifs around Tumblr. I read the whole Game Changers series years ago, I'm a big m/m romance reader, unsurprisingly, and I enjoy a good sports romance tremendously. I am Italian, I know nothing about hockey and this has not prevented from enjoying the hell out of a fair bit of m/m hockey romance and fanfic.
Wild Ice by
makeit_takeit. 46K words. Men's Hockey RPF, Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick. As with all hockey RPF, I have no idea what these two guys look like or even what team they played for, but it's all irrelevant. This is an AU where one of the two is himself, I guess, retired after hockey, while the other is not a hockey player. This is just such a gorgeous love story, with, complex layered characterisation and the natural beauty of Canadian winter landscape as its backdrop. It's a sort of grump/sunshine pairing, I guess. The tags give you a good idea of what to expect.
Front Runner by
makeit_takeit. 60K words. Men's Hockey RPF, Jamie Benn/Tyler Seguin. This is another AU, a high school one, where the characters play football in Texas. Picture Friday Night lights only gayer? :D This is another great story. Again, I know nothing about American football, but I'm a sucker for coming-of-age story mixed in with romance. And this has such a strong sense of place, which makes it all the better. Not that I know the first thing about Texas high school football culture, but I am a big fan of Friday Night Lights, trust me when I say I didn't throw the comparison lightly.
and i spit out the seed by
linearity. Heated Rivalry AU, of the canon divergence kind. Basically Ilya and Shane get outed much earlier than in canon. Amazing characterisation and dialogue.
The Pitt
Since we're talking sports romance, I cannot help but reccing the best sports AU in this fandom: Love Game by homespun. Mel/Frank, ofc, still a WIP but it's going to be complete soon, in, like, a 4 days? And I can already tell this is going to be an all-time favourite. Ah, it's a tennis pro AU. And it's P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

Dec. 4th, 2025 08:00 pmAfter I've eaten I'll be setting off with my 22 year old, sitting on great stats and a pile of gold. By which I mean: studying and pilgrimages BOYAH. (I may not be the intended audience for this game? Or maybe that perception is warped by fun streamers? bc I want to write books and have a nice garden.)
+ Fingers crossed Pluribus drops before I get sleepy. It's really got a hold of me.
Rec-cember Day 4
Gideon the Ninth
Skin Flick by
Harrow undresses like somebody stripping an engine for parts, shedding layer after of black with a choppy, vindictive momentum. With all the eroticism of somebody prepping a taxidermy specimen. Like a case study of all possible conjugations of the verb “to flense”.
And, no, as it turns out; no, Harrowhark Nonagesimus is not, in fact, wearing anything under all that, nothing at all interrupting the faintly ridged shadow of her spine. There’s a lot of shoulder action happening, a lot of sweeping, shallow curves that look longer than they are, a lot of feral skinniness that you’d need a certain kind of palate to appreciate.
So call her a fucking sommelier, because Gideon’s palate is developed , apparently.
She whistles.
Rec-cember Day 4: Sherlock (BBC)
Dec. 4th, 2025 07:03 pmDo I really need to sum up a show about Sherlock Holmes? I'm pretty sure anyone would be familiar with the premises, this particular iteration from the early 2010s aired on the BBC, had Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as the two leads and was set in contemporary London.
While I re-watched the pilot countless times (fun fact, there was a time when I taught English as a Foreign Language to highly motivated adults, and one of my teaching modules was built entirely around the Sherlock pilot and it always went down a treat) the whole series is definitely flawed. The fandom predictably went nuts for the inevitable m/m pairing but I've read all sorts of fic, and even the gen ones or the casefiles (and the crossover/fusions) were a lot of fun.
It's Not the Violin by
copperbadge. Gen but platonic love? 3.8K words. <7i>Somewhere between Alejandro and the fistfight, John Watson became someone Sherlock Holmes would kill for. I liked this one so much it was part of that Sherlock-inspired teaching module, using
FayJay's excellent podfic.
Green Grow the Rushes, O! by@AJHall.ao3. This is technically a casefile but the character bits are more important than the case. And it's so perfectly British and witty. The humour. Btw, you should read anything AJHall has ever written, she was so talented.
The Case of the Unwelcome Owl by
FayJay. 7.1 K words. Gen. Crossover with Harry Potter. This is so much fun. Perfect blending of the two worlds. "So," said John, feeling out of his depth once again. "An owl." It was the same mild, politely curious tone of voice with which he had previously found himself uttering such things as: "So – three bags of frozen AB negative," and "So – a selection of human ears." "Goodness, John, with deductive prowess like that you'll soon be putting me in the shade," Sherlock said tartly. "Can't sneak anything past you, can we?" FayJay also podficced her own story, and thank God she did. How can one single person be so talented?!?
If you need to read only one fic, this should be it: The Least of All Possible Mistakes by@rageprufrock.ao3 If ever a people deserved tasering, it’s Holmeses. It's a freaking novel (almost 120K words), and it's the whole series written from the point of view of a genderswapped Instpector Lestrade, George. I inevitably picture her as an older, British version of George from Dead Like Me and it works. Technically it's Lestrade/Mycroft but there's John/Sherlock too. But it's not a shippy fic. It's a love letter to London written by someone who doesn't live there but clearly loves it. It's also the story of a woman in the police force. It's amazing. It can be read if you don't know the canon. GO READ IT! or better yet, listen to
Lazulus's amazing podfic, another all time favourite of mine.
The Pitt
you need it shouted by oonabashed Mel/Langfdon, explicit, 5.8K words. Mel King isn't used to being the impatient one in her relationships. This was one of the first explicit, smutty fics I've read for this pairing and I still think it's one of the hottest and with the best Mel characterisation. Many authors write Mel as sexually inexperienced or even a virgin, and foten do a fantastic job of it, it's a dynamic that plays beautifully with fanon Frank, but to me the depiction in this fic sounds more plausible. Also, I think this fic is a bit of a hidden gem among the many, many, great stories for this pairing and it's criminally underrated. It needs more hits and kudso, people!

A hug:
Now, I want to be clear, that very first moment, where you're not sure, stick straight and skittery, that part sure isn't worth a damn.
But when ya melt into the person's arms?
And then, Gods, then they melt back? Because maybe they trust you or maybe you're just nice and warm, but the why don't exactly matter.
Because maybe when they melt back, maybe that's when you start thinking it is worth it all. Every bit of bullshit and all the gold in the gate too. For a moment, at least.

Rec-cember Day 2
Star Wars
Song for a fifth child by
Her daily life doesn’t change when Han dies.
He’d been gone for years, and she was used to that. He was there on a Comm link once a week, sometimes, and other times she wouldn’t hear from him for months, but she knew he was out there.
She feels the difference anyway. Like losing a tooth, or a bone in the ear - something from deep inside. It didn’t show, but you knew it was gone.
Rec-cember Day 3: Generation Kill
Dec. 2nd, 2025 10:14 pmGeneration Kill
Since I mentioned it yesterday, I thought I might post about it today. Generation Kill is a 2008 HBO miniseries about the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. On paper, nothing could be farther from what I normally like. However, I fell into the fandom headlong during the pandemic, and, as I wrote at the time, somehow, watching a bunch of puerile marines fumble their way through a poorly-planned, incompetently-led, questionably-motivated military invasion helped me maintain my sanity during lockdown. Basically, I came for the trainwreck factor and stayed for the awesome fic. I think Generation Kill is the fandom with the highest quality of writing I have ever had the pleasure to read in.
As usual, let's start with some stories that could be enjoyed even if you're not familiar with canon.
Don't You Shake Alone by
dsudis. This is PTSD-flavoured baby fic. Yeah... It sounds weird and possibly boring. Yet it isn't. It's romance too (M/M, Brad/Nate for those who know the characters). An excellent depiction of PTSD, new parenthood and two people deciding to commit to each other, all rolled into one. Luckily for me, it also exists in podfic: here by
chemm80, who is another pdoficcer who should be doing this for a living, she's so good.
Rock Happy. This is a Stargate Atlantis crossover. Now, I've only watched SG film 20 years ago and possibily caught only a coupe of eps of SGA (dubbed in Italian, lol) in the paleolithic so I wasn't familiar with either canon. It has a bunch of OCs, I think. This was super interesting. Plotty and gen! And so absorbing.
Born Ready by
makeit_takeit. 98K of the best kind of M/M romance.20 years worth of The Making of Brad and Nate. Best enjoyed if you know the canon, but since this follows our main characters from when they were teenagers and long after canon has ended, you can totally just be swept along in this epic, amazing romance. I'd buy this as a book if I could. And if I could just pay someone to record a podfic version, I would. It's been at the top of my fannish wishlist since reading this masterpiece.
To Shame The Devil by
Kalliste. This is a future!fic AU, with supernatural elements and genderswap. I think it works pretty well for those unfamiliar with canon, honestly. The podfic by Chemm80 is another of my all-time favourites.
I could rec another 10 fics easily, but since it's the lead-up to Christmas I'll leave you with this little festive gem Managing Expectations by
alethia. Podfic version: here by chemm80
The Pitt
So, one of the two hot ER cowboys I mentioned yesterday, Dr Jack Abbot, is a marine veteran himself. The crossover with Generation Kill was just begging to be written and the excellent astronomical_light rose admirably to the challenge and delivered: the path we took to get here. Brad/Nate and Robby/Abbot. “Well, I’ll be damned,” Jack says, resting his hands on his hips and tilting his head in assessment. Santos was right—Brad is a little impaled. It’s been something like twenty years since the last time Jack saw him, yet he looks infuriatingly unchanged. His hair’s a little darker, less sun-bleached blond, but for all that he’s still golden California tan he’s got far fewer lines around his eyes than Jack can say about himself.
Rec-cember Day 2: Merlin
Dec. 1st, 2025 10:45 pmMerlin
This BBC show for children is a prime example of one of those fandoms where, for me, fanon clearly surpassed and trascended canon. I don't think I ever finished watching the show back when it was airing, but man, the Merlin/Arthur fic I have saved I have gone back to hundreds of times in the intervening years, especially as podfic. I don't know why precisely the idea of a relationship between a stuckup but brave prince and its bumbling but loyal manservant was right up my alley but it just was.
The Student Prince by fayjay. This is a modern day AU where Arthur is the heir to the British throne and he meets Merlin at university in Saint Andrews, in circa 2010. This is basically the one of the best YA romances I've ever read, better than most traditionally published stuff and it can totally be read with little to no knowledge of the tv show. I re-listen to the podfic version (read by the author herself, who is actually better than most pro audiobook readers) at least once a year.
fayjay has podficced many of my favourite canon era stories, like In Time of Trial by shinetheway; The Beltane Cycle by
astolat/ Naomi Novik (here is the podfic); The Crown of the Summer Court by
astolat/ Naomi Novik (here is the podfic).
The Pitt
I've fallen down the rabbit hole of Mel/Frank shipping and I regret nothing, the quality of the writing for this pairing is stellar. I have 80+ bookmarks for it on the Ao3.
However, I do have a soft spot for another pairing, and that is Robby/Abbot. The two ER cowboys, chief attending of the day and night shift respectively. Old man yaoi at its finest. My interest in the pairing is completely alethia's fault. I've been a fan of her work since Generation Kill and she is just such a talented author I literally cannot choose which one of the 30+ Robby/Abbot fic she's written so far is my favourite. I love them all. Go on, pick one at random and read it, you will be blown away.
alethia gets these two characters in a way the writers of The Pitt can only dream of.
If you're a podfic nut like me, you could start by listening to Safe Haven by andrasteemraldpetal .
