The power went out last night, then it came back on. The hot water is still out, I don't know if these two incidents have anything to do with eachother.

I have recently watched two versions of Satan's School for Girls, the original 1973 one and the 2000 remake. I initially saw the 2000 version when it aired (because of Shannen Doherty and Julie Benz), however I only caught the tail end of it and never saw the movie in full. It took some time before finding it, and then I watched the 1973 version to compare. Both which were made-for-television movies, both were produced by Aaron Spelling, and both have their own strengths and weaknesses and unique takes on the story being told.

The premise is about a young woman who, after discovering the mysterious death of her sister and not being convinced it was a mere suicide, goes to investigate at her sister's university to discreetly find out the truth of what happened, and as soon as she arrives strange things start happening.

The original 1973 version. )

The 2000 remake. )

My final thoughts, comparing and contrasting the two movies. )

I definitely don't want it to happen considering the current state of media we're in, but I cannot help but wonder what another modern remake of Satan's School for Girls would look like today, just conceptually.

The hot water is not working in my apt, I'm guessing it's like that all over the bldg and I tried to call the front desk about it this morning but they apparently left early for lunch soo I'll have to call them back later. I wonder if the earthquake screwed up the hot water heater. (There was a 4.3 earthquake at about 2 in the morning in Berkeley, I live in Oakland so that's definitely close enough to feel it. My glasses fell off the bedside table but they didn't break.)

Rebel Blade by Davinia Evans was great. It's the third and final book of The Burnished City, an alchemy story taking place in a Byzantine-inspired world.

The plot now focuses on setting up a democracy and I'm always here for this.

There's m/m (to be honest, I've been excitedly waiting for Siyon and Izmirlian to reunite since Book 1, so it's a disappointment that it only happens in the last two pages) and f/f.

Last night I had a very long phone conversation with L. Now I know why I hadn't been hearing from them recently. Two very crappy things happened. They were dating somebody but broke up because this person (not somebody I knew) started treating them really badly and as if that wasn't bad enough, the person they're an in home caregiver for, who has a spinal condition so she can't really take care of herself, had this condition get a LOT worse to the point where she had to go to the hospital. Right now nobody knows for sure if she's going to have to stay in the hospital or some other care facility indefinitely so L. may need another job and place to live and may have to move really far away.
Oh, on top of that somebody dumped garbage in front of my apt door!

I didn't fill the form out. One of the idiots says it isn't meant to single out people who aren't satisfied with them but I don't believe him. (There are a lot of immigrants in my apt bldg. Is this form being sent to ICE? If I were in their shoes I wouldn't fill it out. I'm for sure not going to snitch on them!) On top of being idiots I think they're crooks too, there was something missing from my apt. Bizarrely enough it was a package of partly eaten smoked salmon that was in my fridge 3 days ago. Why anybody would steal that I haven't the slightest. Nothing else seems to be missing. Problem is I can't prove anything.

I have absolutely no idea what to do here. They're doing a party and raffle for the residents but the Fuckup Squad insists that everybody fill out some form rating them to participate. (The forms are NOT anonymous.) I think I have just as much of a right to free food and a chance at a $50 gift card as anybody else living here but if I let them know how incompetent I think they are they'll use some excuse to kick me out. If I lie on the form it'll only encourage them to keep fucking up (and I don't feel right about lying anyway, even to people I don't like.) If I don't fill the form out they are going to want to know why. (Even if I didn't have a problem with lying, I don't think I could make up a convincing one to explain why I didn't want to fill out the form anyway.)

We are also reading Aracelis Girmay’s “You Are Who I Love,” in which the speaker unfurls a list of people they love, people they want to see survive, people doing what those not committed to close and tender attention might call the daily tasks of living: a person stirring a pot of beans, a person selling roses out of a cart, a person crossing a border, a person carrying their brother home, a person singing Leonard Cohen to the snow. You, reader, do not personally know these people, but their motivations spark a familiar feeling—here is someone trying to survive in a world that can render a person unable to get out of bed. You, too, may love a person who cannot get out of bed, which is why you cherish the things that convey, I am trying to stitch together enough small moments to have a life for a little bit longer.

I have to admit that when all the hubbub of him being cast in Winter Soldier happened, I was entirely out of the loop. He didn't have much presence in my life growing up, despite me devouring movies. But it's been nice to read about his life since yesterday. I never knew about all his activism.

Robert Redford, Environmentalism, and the Most Prescient Movie Ever Made by Dave Leviton is a good write-up.

I may look into a few of his movies when I get home. Meanwhile, here's a All The Predident's Men vid: Me and Bernstein down by the schoolyard by [personal profile] findmeinthealps.

eta Sneakers is a movie that's being mentioned a lot, I may seek that one out. Here's a writeup at PC Mag (makes sense, as it's about cyber security, I believe?)

I had to switch painkillers because I ran out and I went to the drugstore to get more and they didn't have any ibuprofen except for the kind you give to babies so I bought a bigass bottle of a different kind and so far they seem to be working better. Also I'm going to PT this afternoon and I have to remember to schedule more appointments because they won't let me schedule two months' worth of appointments at a time like they used to. My friend was going to come over today to go swimming but that got postponed till tomorrow. I also have to take a break from trying to get ahold of L., I have a feeling they're really feeling burned out from work.
