I had the nicest time at Skeptics in the Pub last night, my friend who brings me also brought his daughter who I really got along great with. Now back to home with my dishwasher that doesn't fucking work and my neighbors' screaming baby.

Hoping to hear from a friend about a ride to Skeptics in the Pub tonight, I've already e mailed him a couple of times and he has my cell number. In the meantime I have to mail in my electric bill payment, pick up breakfast stuff and go to PT.

The Moonstone Covenant by Jill Hammer was absolutely amazing! Four wives investigate the death of Olloise's parents and end up in the middle of a political plot.

This is my favourite 2025 read so far. It's beautifully written like old-school fantasy, the comparison to Le Guin isn't exaggerated. The worldbuilding is rich (thanks for the map and the appendices!) and the many characters have complex lives. I also enjoyed the "book" theme as one of the wives is a warrior-librarian and another has book magic.

This is established f/f/f/f, which is lovely as all-female polyamory is still rare rep. Minor enbies make an appearance.

----------

Wednesday S2A was a lot of fun! It makes sense as a story arc, so you don't need to wait until September to watch both parts together.

This season focuses on the whole family, not just Wednesday and Thing.

Billie Piper has joined the cast, but has been underused so far. Hopefully, she'll have more to do in S2B.

I have to do both grocery shopping and laundry today, fixing myself a bigass pot of Celebration tea because I need the energy. God, I wish I had a car.

Had a great dinner last night and it was so nice to see my friends although I'm still not happy L. cancelled.
Since some of us are big science fiction geeks we were talking about the Twilight Zone and some strange things happened. One of my friends has tarot cards and I asked for a reading and got a really weird one that made no sense. On the way back home my other friend was not sure how to get to my place from the restaurant (he'd never been to that restaurant before) and the GPS kept leading him the wrong way, then what looked to me like a much bigger and brighter than usual full moon rose.

I was really looking forward to tonight and having dinner with L. and some other friends and L. cancelled at the last minute again. I'm still glad to see my other friends but I'm really worried about L.'s health, they sounded perfectly OK when I talked to them on the phone last night and they cancel again late this morning because they're not feeling well again.

Not much going on here other than me screwing up my leg having to lean on the damn dishwasher to get it to work.

Had a great time with my friends last night. Went swimming earlier this afternoon, the latch to the gate on the pool was stuck and one of the Idiot Squad lied to me and said the main bldg key would unlock it. Well, it didn't even fit in the damn keyhole. Luckily it wasn't actually locked, it was only stuck so I was finally able to force it open and had a great swim. It felt rusty.

Hello, one and all!

++ Critical Role posted official announcement the other day regarding developments for its upcoming fourth campaign, which features quite a shakeup. Among the news that Brennan Lee Mulligan will be the main DM for the campaign itself (which he further confirms in an interview), Matthew Mercer will be featured as a player at the table along with some familiar faces and newer faces as well, and that this will be a brand new world to explore.

My further thoughts on the announcement. )

++ There is going to be a Hostel television series in development at Peacock, a bizarre choice given the subject matter of the incredibly violent and often polarizing horror franchise, however, I think if they play their cards right it could actually work.

I have thoughts and opinions on this. )

As a fan of horror, I know that not everything is going to be an easy sell for the larger broader audiences, and it's not usually a genre most want to watch on television unless it's of the right target demographic and the story and tone is interesting (see: Hannibal). It makes me wonder how they'll market this Hostel series to begin with, because even if one hasn't watched those films many know of them and their reputation.

Had some Lady Grey tea. Just got back from getting groceries at Safeway including the stuff to make brownies for my friend's birthday day after tomorrow. Everything from Safeway seems to be OK except I got a bone in my Kung Pao chicken from their scoop Chinese dept.

July saw the END of the upstairs renovation project, woo hoo! It took so much longer than expected – the estimate had been 4 to 6 weeks, but it actually took 12 weeks. Color me very relieved and grateful. And happy with the results!

Here's July's list of accomplishments.

5. Read Vorkosigan series
Started and finished Cryoburn, the penultimate novel in this series. It took me a while to get into the book but once I did it turned out to be an interesting and gripping story. Always fun to watch Miles juggle so many different crises and plots all at once. The ending did not surprise me at all, although I was sad for Miles and Mark not getting one last visit in with Aral.

28. Weight monitoring
Well, between the stress, lack of exercise and horrible diet (so much ice cream and other sweets), I gained a TON of weight in July. I’ve now started wrestling my eating habits back into submission and am hopeful that with less stress things will switch direction.

29. BMI monitoring
Of course it went up.

94. Clean phone of unneeded apps
This has been done. Basically the only things I have on the phone now are a web browser, my email and messaging, YouTube and the weather app. No games, no social media, no news except for what little I get via YouTube. It’s lovely to be more simplified.

In the HOUSE category, we are officially done with the upstairs reno project. Except for the louvered doors to the a/c closet, which were taken away to be painted and still need to be reinstalled. All in all, of the 35 goals in this category, 26 are now completed, 4 were deleted, 1 is in progress and 4 have not yet been started. That’s one hell of a lot of accomplishment only 15 months in!

47. Cut down tree by driveway.
I have deleted this item as unnecessary to sell the house.

53. Repair/replace malfunctioning exterior spotlights.
This one is in progress. Austin did replace the fixture and bulbs and it still does not work. I don’t think all four bulbs we tried can be bad, so it is time to call in a licensed electrician to diagnose and fix whatever the issue is.

70. Repair/update stairs and banister
These are done and I am so thrilled with the excellent results. Yeah, they look like most stairs these days, nothing to remark on, but wow, such an improvement over the old DIY rickety stairs. The banister is now solid as a rock, as are the stairs. They feel so much lighter and more open, too.

71. Renovate upstairs bathroom
The bathroom is finally complete and it looks great! (Well, except for the unfortunate floor tile choice on my part.) I have enough towels to put in there but need to pick up a floor mat yet. Other than that, done!

75. Change outlets and switchplates upstairs.
One of the final finishing touches, all done.

76. Install new carpet upstairs
What a difference this made! Between the fresh paint and the carpeting, it started to look and feel like a finished room.

And that's all I've got this month. Fingers crossed that August proves to be as productive. I've got to accomplish a lot if I'm to get the house on the market in September (which is my tentative goal). If it pushes much longer, I'm not sure I'll be able to make the move this year because of weather.

I found out earlier this morning that this family I was very friendly with is moving out of the bldg. :(
The damn bldg manager was even ruder to me than usual when I was paying my rent this morning.
My dishwasher is not working at all unless I lean against it which is fucking up my leg. Usually it does this only part of the cycle, now it's doing it the whole time!
The cupcakes at least came out well but the recipe says it makes a lot more than it actually does. It said 24 to 28 cupcakes but it only made 16. That's not going to be enough to go around at the picnic tomorrow, there are always a LOT of people at this picnic. I'm going anyway though.
